Maruyama
A moment to unwind in the city.
A short walk from Omori Station, Oshokuji Maruyama serves hearty teishoku sets headlined by ribeye ginger pork, crisp tonkatsu, vegetable-packed tonjiru soup, and classic diner sides at the counter.
01 / ABOUT THE PLACE
Stepping through the noren curtains of Oshokuji Maruyama in an alley near Omori Station, visitors are greeted by the aroma of sweet-savory sauce and fresh ginger. Seating is centered around a counter, carrying the unpretentious atmosphere of a neighborhood diner where solo diners can easily settle in.
The main attraction for many patrons is the variety of shogayaki (ginger pork) set meals. The house-favorite ribeye ginger pork set pairs substantial, thick slices of pork with a punchy ginger sauce, yielding juicy flavor and sweet pork fat with every bite. Mixing the rich glaze into the generous heap of shredded cabbage on the plate is an integral part of the meal. Options also include pork shoulder loin, standard loin, and an easygoing pork belly ginger pork set, giving diners the freedom to match the cut to their preferred balance of lean meat and richness.
The miso soup served with each set is prepared as tonjiru, loaded with generous chunks of daikon, carrot, and tofu, lending a mild sweetness and savory depth that goes naturally with white rice. Tonkatsu is another core pillar of the kitchen, featuring choices like the premium loin katsu and special fillet katsu sets for those looking to enjoy a crisp panko exterior over flavorful pork. The menu extends to classic diner staples such as quick-fried ham and eggs, potato salad, fried horse mackerel (aji fry), and mackerel simmered in miso, with regulars often seen enjoying them alongside a glass of beer or Hoppy.
The restaurant is open for both lunch and dinner and accepts cash only, so having yen on hand before dropping by is recommended. When you want to recharge over flavorful pork, freshly cooked rice, and a warming bowl of soup, Oshokuji Maruyama delivers a thoroughly grounded and satisfying meal.
